Ubuntu uses the open source HPLIP drivers.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#8217;t the case for my home computer.<\/p>\n<p>I was recently gifted a HP LaserJet P1005 and although it popped up in the printer list, I was unable to print to it. Ubuntu told me the print jobs were sent, but nothing comes out. Some online searching revealed the solution(s).<\/p>\n<p>First, I found <a href=\"http:\/\/askubuntu.com\/questions\/464651\/problem-with-printing-hplip-in-ubuntu-14-04\">this article<\/a>, which has a commandline sample that ensures my hp-setup command would work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><code>sudo apt-get install hplip-dbg hplip-gui<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Apparently, this is related to a broken printer driver, which can be fixed with the following command.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><code>sudo hp-setup<\/code><\/p>\n<p>This install didn&#8217;t initially work for me, as I was receiving the following error.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; hplip-3.15.2-plugin.run file does not match its checksum. File may have been corrupted or altered.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To fix this, I followed <a href=\"http:\/\/cd-rw.org\/t\/fix-the-broken-hp-printer-driver-installation-on-ubuntu-15-04-linux-mint-17-02-and-others\/33\">these instructions<\/a> and went to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openprinting.org\/download\/printdriver\/auxfiles\/HP\/plugins\/\">HPLIP website<\/a> and grabbed the two corresponding files (.run and .asc). Now, when running the hp-setup wizard, it asks if I want to download drivers or use local files.\u00a0 Go with the local option and browse to the path of the files you just downloaded.<\/p>\n<p>That was it.\u00a0 Internet saves the day yet again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve installed HP printers on a laptop prior&#8230; though by &#8220;install&#8221;, I mean that I plugged a printer in and it just worked.
