“But I thought Twitter was free?”\u00a0\u00a0 It is, till they decide it’s not.\u00a0 We’re talking “free bird<\/em>” here, not just “free beer<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

Why do I use WordPress<\/a>?\u00a0 Because it’s free and open source.\u00a0 I can archive my entries locally.\u00a0 I don’t have to worry about the proprietary<\/a> service (aka Livejournal) shutting down, and denying me access to my entries.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I can fully customize the look and function of my blog.\u00a0 I can… well…\u00a0 I can do anything<\/em>. If I don’t have the time to setup my own WordPress server, I can go to WordPress.com<\/a> and get a free account.\u00a0 Then, when I do eventually get the time to setup my own server, I can archive ALL my blog entries and upload them to my own server.<\/p>\n

This type of thinking applies to just about everything I do.\u00a0 If I can find an open source alternative, I’ll use it… or at least give it a try.\u00a0 My latest discovery was Identi!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Identi<\/a>, an alternative to Twitter<\/a>. Laconi<\/a> (on which Identi is based) is open source & more scalable than Twitter.\u00a0 What’s that mean?\u00a0 You can download the software and set up your own server.\u00a0 Also, Laconi servers can talk to other Laconi servers. \u00a0 I mean, that’s kinda the whole idea behind the web, isn’t it?<\/p>\n

Till another better, more free alternative to Twitter pops up, you’ll be hearing me talk a lot about Identi, so get used to it.<\/p>\n

Don’t feel like downloading Laconi and setting it up?\u00a0 Then just go to Identi.ca and and open a free account. \u00a0 Don’t want to leave your Twitter followers high and dry?\u00a0 Well, you can have your Identi.ca<\/a> account update your Twitter account, automatically…\u00a0 while you migrate.<\/p>\n

Sorry about that… I just get pretty excited when people share through open source.<\/p>\n
